In churches all over this country (and in some places on other countries), this coming Sunday, July 4th, will be filled with patriotic music and red white & blue ribbon, and clothing made of flags. And I have nothing against any of that. Everyone who knows me knows that I am very grateful and God-blessed to be a citizen of the United States of America, and I am honored by those who choose to be the protectors of freedom in my stead. My biggest hero in the world is my brother, Will, who serves in the Army. I unequivocally believe that, while we have much to learn and improve as a nation, this is the greatest political nation that the modern world knows.
But, there is a greater nation – one that we can be citizens of, right now, that supersedes the good ol’ USA – in a mighty way: the Kingdom of God. By God’s grace, we are blessed. By God’s grace, we are free to pursue life. By God’s grace, we are able to worship in freedom. By God’s grace, men and women are willing to defend the existence of this nation with their lives if needed. God gifts as He chooses, and those of us who are blessed with citizenship in this country need to thank Him first. We worship Him – not his handiwork.
So, enjoy the day. Eat some hot-dogs and hamburgers. Spend quality time with your family and friends. Enjoy some fireworks.
Just don’t forget to thank God. Don’t forget who is 1st on the 4th.
